The short version: You don’t need an account to read Hello Korea Tips, and there’s no newsletter. Like almost every website, this site’s server keeps basic technical logs. Google and its partners may use cookies to measure visits and show ads, and you can turn off personalized ads at any time. If you write to me through the contact form, I’ll see your name, email address, and message, and I won’t sell any of them.
This page covers hellokoreatips.com only. Other sites, including the official pages linked from the guides, have their own policies.
Who runs this site
Hello Korea Tips (hellokoreatips.com) is a personal project run under a pen name. The site is built with WordPress publishing software and stored on the servers of a web hosting company.
Information collected automatically
When you open a page, your browser sends standard technical information to the server: your IP address, your browser type and version (your user agent), the page you asked for, the page that sent you here, and the time. The hosting company’s servers record this in logs, as almost every website does. These logs are used to deliver pages, keep the site secure, and fix problems. I don’t use them to identify individual readers.
Information you send me
You can read everything here without giving me your name or email address. The only personal information I receive directly is what you choose to send:
- Contact form: If you send a message through the form on the Contact page, I receive your name, email address, and message by email. The form doesn’t keep a copy on this site. I use them to read and answer your message, and to fix a guide if you’ve reported a mistake. I won’t sell them or add you to a mailing list. If you’d like your message deleted, just ask.
- Comments: If comments are open on a guide and you leave one, your comment and the name you enter are public. WordPress also stores the email address you enter, which isn’t shown, along with your IP address and browser user agent to help detect spam. WordPress may send a scrambled form of your email address (a hash) to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a profile picture there. Comments are stored on this site’s server. If you’d like a comment removed, email me.
Cookies
Cookies are small files that a website saves in your browser.
- WordPress: You don’t need cookies to read a page here. WordPress sets cookies when someone logs in to manage the site, and, if comments are open, when a commenter chooses to have their name and email remembered for next time. Those comment cookies last about a year. Tools that keep the site fast or secure may also set small technical cookies.
- Google: If this site uses Google Analytics or Google AdSense, as described below, Google and its partners may set or read cookies in your browser. To learn more, see How Google uses cookies.
Visitors in some countries may see a cookie or consent notice on this site.
Ads
This site may show ads through Google AdSense. Here’s how those ads use cookies:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Ads Settings.
- You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices.
Other third-party vendors and ad networks may also serve ads here and use cookies to do so. These companies can change over time. Google publishes lists of vendors certified for third-party ads, and you can visit a vendor’s own website to see whether it offers an opt-out.
Turning off personalized ads doesn’t remove ads. You may still see them, and they may be based on the page you’re reading. If this site shows you a consent message, you can accept or refuse there. I don’t pick individual ads, and an ad here isn’t a recommendation.
Visitor statistics (Google Analytics)
This site may use Google Analytics to see which guides people read and how they found them. When you visit, your browser automatically sends Google certain information, such as the address of the page and your IP address, and Google may set or read cookies. I look at this as overall numbers and don’t use it to identify individual readers.
For details, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. To stop Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Your choices
Besides the opt-outs above, you can block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. Some websites may not work as well afterward.
Depending on where you live, privacy laws may give you other rights over your personal data, such as asking to see or delete it. For what I hold, which is the messages you send me and any comments you leave, write to me through the Contact page. For data that Google holds, use your Google Account or the tools linked above.
Children
This site is written for adults and isn’t aimed at children.
