Pick T-money (티머니) if all you need is a card for subways, buses and taxis. Pick WOWPASS (와우패스) if you also want one card for shops and you’d rather turn foreign cash into card money than carry won. Both get you through the same transit gates, because a WOWPASS carries a T-money balance of its own.
Topping up a T-money balance in person takes Korean won cash on both cards, at convenience stores and subway machines. WOWPASS adds one more way: moving money across in its app.
Quick answer
- 🚇 Transit only: T-money, around 3,000 won for the card at convenience stores and subway machines
- 💳 Transit plus shopping: WOWPASS, with a membership fee of 5,000 or 6,000 won depending on which official page you read
- 💵 Either way: Carry some won cash for top-ups at stores and stations
What each card does
| T-money | WOWPASS | |
|---|---|---|
| Card cost | Around 3,000 won, more for special designs | Membership fee of 5,000 or 6,000 won |
| Where you get it | Convenience stores, subway vending machines | WOWPASS machines, with your passport |
| Transit | Yes | Yes, from its T-money balance |
| Paying in shops | Some convenience stores, but mainly transit | Yes, in stores, from the WOWPASS balance |
| Loading money | Won cash at convenience stores and subway stations | Foreign cash at machines or cards in the app; won cash or an app transfer for the T-money side |
| Cash back out | Convenience-store balance refunds for a 500-won fee, subject to store limits | Withdraw up to 100,000 won at a machine for a 1,000-won fee |
A T-money card holds one balance, mostly used for transit, while a WOWPASS holds two: the WOWPASS balance, which pays through the card’s IC chip, and a T-money balance that you tap for transport, convenience stores and cafes.
In the WOWPASS app, money moves only from the WOWPASS balance to the T-money balance, so don’t overfill the T-money side.
Yuna’s pick
Landing with foreign cash and planning to shop? I’d get WOWPASS and top up the T-money side from the app.
Only riding the subway and buses? I’d get a plain T-money card and keep some won cash.

T-money: one balance, topped up with cash
You can top up a physical T-money card at convenience stores and subway stations. I’d keep some won cash handy.
Tmoney’s current convenience-store guide lists GS25, CU, 7-Eleven and Emart24. I’d try whichever is nearest your hotel.
Tmoney’s own blog says not to assume a foreign credit card can top up a standard T-money card, and that cash is the most reliable option. I’d top up in small amounts and add more when the balance runs low.
In Seoul, a T-money card gives you access to eligible transfer discounts between buses and the subway. The same blog lists taxis with compatible card readers too.
In Seoul, one journey can include up to four eligible transfers, or five rides. Tap when boarding and getting off, then board the next service within 30 minutes, or 60 minutes if you board between 21:00 and 07:00. Transfers on the same route or vehicle don’t qualify.
Tmoney also sells a TMONEY TRAVEL CARD for 4,000 won at convenience stores and the bus ticket office at Incheon Airport, and says it works for transit anywhere in the country. Its TMONEY TRAVEL CARD + costs 6,000 won and adds WOWPASS payments.
WOWPASS: two balances on one card
How WOWPASS works, from its own help pages
- Getting the card: at a WOWPASS machine, with your passport and some cash
- WOWPASS balance: load cash in 16 currencies at machines, or international cards in the app
- T-money balance: won cash at subway machines or convenience stores, or a transfer from the WOWPASS balance in the app (iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, per its 2025 guide)
- Cash out: up to 100,000 won per withdrawal, 1,000-won fee
- No charge for: currency exchange, payments or an annual fee
The help pages say the WOWPASS machines at Incheon’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 sit in CU stores, take only won cash, and don’t exchange currency or pay out cash. The Gimpo Airport machine, per the same pages, has every service.
If you land at Incheon with only foreign cash, I’d plan to set the card up at a machine that does exchange.
WOWPASS pages disagree on the membership fee. The current help page gives 6,000 won, while a November 2025 service guide and VisitKorea’s page give 5,000 won. The card networks accepted for app top-ups aren’t listed the same way either, so check the app before relying on a particular card.
⚠️ Heads-up
If you lose a WOWPASS, its November 2025 service guide says the T-money balance can’t be recovered, even after a reissue. That’s another reason to keep that side small.

Can you just tap your own credit card?
Don’t plan on it. In October 2025, Seoul announced a plan to let travelers ride buses and subways with their overseas credit cards directly, with the subway terminals on Lines 1–8 to be replaced in 2027. As of November 4, 2026, I couldn’t find an official launch notice for direct overseas-card payments on Seoul buses or subways, so I’d still get a transit card.
Since March 17, 2026, 440 new vending machines at 273 stations on Lines 1–8 accept internationally issued cards for Climate Cards and single-journey tickets, with an average fee of about 3.7%. Seoul’s notice says card payments apply at first to buying Climate Cards and recharging 1- to 7-day passes, and it doesn’t mention T-money top-ups. If a short-term pass with unlimited rides suits your trip, our Climate Card guide covers it.
Getting money back before you fly home
At convenience stores, you can get your T-money balance back in won cash, minus a 500-won fee. Refund limits vary by chain, and the card’s purchase price isn’t refunded.
Partial refunds work only at Tmoney Town and the Tmoney service centers in subway stations, for 10,000 to 50,000 won, in 10,000-won units.
For WOWPASS, VisitKorea says the remaining balance can come back as won cash through a WOWPASS machine. The Incheon Airport machines don’t pay out, so I’d cash out in the city or at Gimpo.
WOWPASS’s November 2025 service guide lists a 500-won fee for refunding the T-money balance. Before you fly, I’d spend the T-money side down rather than queue for a refund.
Honest take
If you’ll pay by card in shops anyway, a WOWPASS gives you a second balance you may not need. It earns its fee when you arrive with foreign cash you want to turn into card money.
FAQ
Can I top up T-money with a foreign credit card?
Not reliably. Tmoney’s blog says not to assume it works, and its guide for foreigners asks for won cash. With WOWPASS, you can move money from the WOWPASS balance to the T-money balance in the app.
Does WOWPASS work on the subway?
Yes, through its T-money balance, which you tap at the gate like any T-money card.
Who can I call for help in English?
Seoul’s Dasan Call Center, listed in Tmoney’s guide for foreigners, answers in foreign languages at 120, then press 9. WOWPASS points you to chat in its app, under Settings, then Customer Service.
